1 cup diced water chestnuts
1 (4 oz.) can mushrooms, drained
1/2 cup chopped or thinly sliced celery
1/2 small onion (1/4 cup) finely chopped
4 hard-boiled eggs, diced

  • For a richer flavor, use a combination of chicken broth and white wine in the sauce. The wine will add a subtle depth of flavor to the dish.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables to the casserole, such as carrots, celery, or peas. This will add more color and nutrition to the dish.
  • If you don't have a Dutch oven, you can also use a large skillet or braising pan. Just make sure it has a lid so you can cover the casserole while it cooks.
  • Serve the casserole with a side of mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles. It's also delicious topped with a dollop of sour cream or yogurt.
