CROUTONS MADE IN THE WOK

Croutons Made in the Wok image

This was a readers tip in Fine Cooking. No recipe with it, but when I read the tip it made sense to me. The lady said you can make more croutons in the wok then on one oven tray....The amount of oil may seem a lot but this is for many croutons and you will need it to crisp them proper. If you want to add Parmesan to the croutons, do that after you turned off the heat, sprinkle on and toss quickly.

Time 20m

Yield 4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 -5 cups bread cubes
6 tablespoons vegetable oil, I use 3 olive oil and 3 canola oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried thyme (or a mix) or 1 teaspoon oregano (or a mix)

Steps:

  • Mix the oil, garlic powder and herbs in a large bowl.
  • Add the bread cubes and toss until coated all around.
  • Get your wok really hot, add the bread and stir-fry until nicely browned.

Tips:

  • Choose the right bread: Stale or slightly dried-out bread is best for croutons, as it will absorb the flavors of the oil and seasonings better. You can also use fresh bread, but be sure to toast it before cutting it into cubes.
  • Cut the bread into uniform cubes: This will help them cook evenly. The size of the cubes is up to you, but 1-inch cubes are a good starting point.
  • Toss the bread cubes with oil and seasonings: This will help them to brown and crisp up. You can use any type of oil you like, but olive oil or butter are good choices. As for seasonings, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper are all classic options.
  • Cook the croutons in a hot oven: This will help them to get crispy. A temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit is a good starting point. Be sure to watch the croutons closely so that they don't burn.
  • Store the croutons in an airtight container: This will help them to stay fresh for up to a week. You can also freeze the croutons for up to a month.

Conclusion:

Croutons are the perfect topping for a variety of salads and soups. They are also delicious as a snack or appetizer. With a few simple ingredients and a little time, you can easily make your own croutons at home. So next time you're looking for a way to add some extra flavor and crunch to your favorite dishes, give these recipes a try.
