CHERRY CRISP

Cherry Crisp image

The very first time that I made Cherry Crisp, my brother happened to be visiting. He is an ice cream lover-but he passed up the scoops of vanilla that he tops most desserts with so he could taste the cherries better! Wheat, soybeans and milo are the main crops on our farm. We also have three small cherry trees. I apportion all of that harvest for this recipe. My husband's is the manager of a coop. I work part-time as a church secretary...teach piano in our home...and enjoy making clothes for myself and our 3-year-old daughter. Cross-stitch is one of my favorite hobbies.

Tips:

  • Use Fresh Cherries: Fresh cherries provide a burst of natural sweetness and a delightful tartness to the crisp. If using frozen cherries, thaw them completely before measuring and be sure to drain off any excess liquid.
  • Choose the Right Apples: Apples add a complementary flavor and texture to the crisp. Granny Smith apples are a popular choice for their tartness, but you can also use Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Pink Lady apples.
  • Use Quick Oats: Quick oats cook more quickly than regular oats, resulting in a tender and flavorful crisp topping. If you don't have quick oats, you can use rolled oats, but increase the cooking time by 5 minutes.
  • Spice It Up: Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger to the filling for a warm and inviting flavor. You can also add a teaspoon of lemon zest for a refreshing citrus note.
  • Don't Overmix the Topping: The topping should be crumbly and not too dense. Overmixing will result in a tough and chewy topping.
  • Bake Until Golden Brown: The crisp is done baking when the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Keep a close eye on the crisp towards the end of baking to prevent burning.

Conclusion:

With its delightful combination of sweet and tart flavors, and a crispy oat topping, this easy dump cherry crisp is a dessert that will be enjoyed by everyone. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra special treat. Whether you're entertaining guests or simply looking for a comforting dessert to enjoy on a cold night, this cherry crisp is sure to satisfy your cravings.
