Categories     Food & Cooking     Breakfast & Brunch Recipes     Bread Recipes

Time 30m

Yield Makes 1 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon sugar
3/4 teaspoon fine salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1 cup buttermilk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Sift flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and baking soda into a medium bowl. Work in butter with your fingertips or a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Mix in buttermilk with your hands until just combined.
  • Turn out mixture onto a lightly floured work surface. Quickly bring dough together, and pat into a 7-inch circle about 1 inch thick. Cut out 12 rounds with a floured 2-inch biscuit cutter, gathering and patting out scraps as necessary.
  • Arrange rounds on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake until cooked through and golden brown, 10 to 15 minutes. Serve warm.

Tips:

  • Mise en Place: Before you start baking, measure and gather all your ingredients and tools. This will help you stay organized and prevent any scrambling.
  • Follow the Recipe Carefully: Baking is a science, so it's important to follow the recipe exactly. Don't substitute ingredients or change the measurements unless you know what you're doing.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: The fresher your ingredients, the better your bread and biscuits will taste. If possible, use organic or locally sourced ingredients.
  • Pay Attention to the Temperature: The temperature of your ingredients and oven can affect the outcome of your baking. Make sure to preheat your oven to the correct temperature and use a thermometer to check the temperature of your dough.
  • Don't Overmix: Overmixing can make your bread and biscuits tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Let the Dough Rise: Rising allows the yeast to produce carbon dioxide gas, which gives bread and biscuits their light and airy texture. Be patient and let the dough rise until it has doubled in size.
  • Bake Until Golden Brown: The best way to tell if your bread or biscuits are done baking is to insert a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, they're done.
  • Conclusion:

With a little practice, you'll be able to bake delicious bread and biscuits at home. Just remember to follow the tips above and you'll be sure to impress your family and friends with your baking skills.
