Tips:

  • Choose the right yams: Look for yams that are firm and have smooth, unblemished skin. Avoid yams that are soft or have bruises or cuts.
  • Peel the yams carefully: Use a sharp knife to peel the yams, being careful not to remove too much of the flesh. You can also use a vegetable peeler.
  • Boil the yams until tender: Place the peeled yams in a large pot of cold water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the yams are tender when pierced with a fork.
  • Drain the yams and mash them: Drain the yams in a colander and then return them to the pot. Use a potato masher or a fork to mash the yams until they are smooth and creamy.
  • Add the apples and spices: Stir the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt into the mashed yams. Mix until well combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to a baking dish: Pour the yam and apple mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Top with the streusel topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon. Mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the yam and apple mixture.
  • Bake the casserole: Bake the casserole in a preheated 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the streusel topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
  • Let the casserole cool slightly before serving: Let the casserole cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld and the casserole to set.

Conclusion:

Yam and apple casserole is a classic comfort food dish that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. Whether you like your casserole sweet or savory, with a crunchy streusel topping or a creamy whipped topping, there is a yam and apple casserole recipe out there for you.
