DEAN'S FAMILY REUNION BAKED BEANS

Dean's Family Reunion Baked Beans image

Dean is the name that I was called as a kid growing up by the older generation of adults. Many of whom never realized that my actual name was Rose Mary. So when I added this recipe to my cookbook I named the recipe Dean's Family Reunion Baked Beans, so that they would know that this is the original recipe that I had been making...

Time 2h50m

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 1/2 -5 lb lean ground beef
2 large onions, (2 cups) chopped
1/3 c liquid smoke
32 oz heinz catsup (my preference)
2 c dark molasses
18 oz barbeque sauce( i like sweet baby rays)
1 c prepared yellow mustard
3 c dark brown sugar
4 large bell peppers ( i use red & green)
1 lb smoked bacon slices
14 lb pork & beans, drained

Steps:

  • 1. PREHEAT OVEN TO 325 DEGREES F. Saute onions & bell peppers with lean ground beef until meat is browned in a large commercial- size pot. Drain any excess fat & liquid when meat mixture is cooked. Add meat mixture back into pot, & then add catsup, mustard, liquid smoke, molasses, Bar B Q sauce, brown sugar & DRAINED beans into pot, & simmer over low heat.
  • 2. With a large spoon stir to mix all the ingredients together. Continue to stir occassionally while cooking over low heat to prevent sticking. Let simmer uncovered, about 30 minutes .Then remove from heat.
  • 3. Precook all of the bacon partially in microwave. Then spray a large deep roasting pan or several 9 X 13 size pans with cooking spray, then pour beans into pans. Cover top of beans randomly with precooked bacon slices. Bake in preheated 325 degree F. oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until some of the liquid has baked off, and beans appear to have thickened.
  • 4. PLEASE NOTE: Oven temperatures vary so please check after 1 1/2 hours. Enjoy The Beefy Baked Beans recipe that I posted is somewhat similiar to this one but smaller in size, with a few slight variations.

FAMILY FAVORITE BAKED BEANS RECIPE - (4.5/5)

Family Favorite Baked Beans Recipe - (4.5/5) image

Provided by msippigrl

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 (28-ounce) cans Bush's 'Country Style, Baked Beans with Bacon & Extra Brown Sugar, undrained
1 (15-ounce) can pork and beans, drained (I used Van Camp's)
1/2 small onion, chopped, scant 1/2 cup
1/2 small green bell pepper, chopped, about 1/3 cup
1 tablespoon cooking oil, or bacon fat
1/4 to 1/3 cup K.C. Masterpiece Original Barbecue Sauce
1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/4 cup ketchup (I used Hunt's)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 or 2 drops liquid smoke, optional (I used Hickory)
1/3 cup crisply cooked and crumbled bacon (or packaged 'Real' bacon pieces)
Additional cooked bacon for garnish, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large non-stick saucepan set over medium heat, saute onion and bell pepper in about a tablespoon cooking oil or bacon fat just until onion is translucent. Add all remaining ingredients to the pot with the onion and bell pepper, stirring gently to combine. Heat until just warmed through (not boiling), stirring occasionally. (Watch carefully, the sugar might cause it to stick.) Pour warmed beans into an 11x7" casserole dish (or equivalent) and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until bubbly, stirring once halfway through baking time. If desired, garnish top with additional cooked bacon pieces or whole strips during last 5 minutes of baking time. Remove from oven and let rest 5-10 minutes before serving. (The beans will thicken more as they cool.)

Tips:

  • Soaking the beans overnight: This helps to reduce the cooking time and makes the beans more digestible.
  • Using a variety of beans: This adds flavor and texture to the dish. Try using a combination of white beans, black beans, and kidney beans.
  • Adding aromatics: Onions, garlic, and celery are classic aromatics that add flavor to baked beans. You can also add other vegetables, such as carrots or bell peppers.
  • Using a flavorful liquid: Chicken broth or beef broth adds a lot of flavor to baked beans. You can also use water, but the beans will be less flavorful.
  • Spices and seasonings: Salt, pepper, and brown sugar are essential seasonings for baked beans. You can also add other spices and herbs, such as cumin, chili powder, or smoked paprika.
  • Baking the beans low and slow: This allows the flavors to meld and the beans to become tender.
  • Serving the beans with your favorite sides: Baked beans are often served with cornbread, mashed potatoes, or coleslaw.

Conclusion:

Baked beans are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are perfect for potlucks, picnics, and family gatherings. With a little planning and preparation, you can easily make a batch of baked beans that everyone will love. So next time you're looking for a hearty and flavorful meal, give baked beans a try. You won't be disappointed!
