Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 to 4 green tomatoes
1/2 c all purpose flour or 1/2 cup cormeal
2 eggs
salt and pepper
1 dash(es) garlic powder
1/2 to 3/4 c cooking oil

Steps:

  • 1. Slice green tomatoes into slices about 1/4 inch thick. In a bowl beat eggs with a whisk.
  • 2. In another bowl add salt and pepper and garlic powder to the meal or flour whenever you decide to use for breading.
  • 3. There is really not that much difference. I usually have a bowl of cornmeal and i do about half the tomatoes in flour and half in meal.
  • 4. You can do the okra the same way or just use either one.Dip the tomato slices into the egg and then the meal or flour.
  • 5. Have your oil hot and deep enough in the skillet to cover about half the tomato slice. Cook on one side turn and continue cooking until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  • 6. For okra cut okra into 1/4 inch pieces and dip into egg and then flour or meal. Cook just like you did the tomatoes.

Tips:

  • Choose firm, unblemished green tomatoes for frying. Smaller tomatoes are ideal, as they are less likely to fall apart during the cooking process.
  • Slice the tomatoes into 1/2-inch thick slices. Thicker slices will take longer to cook and may not crisp up properly.
  • Dredge the tomato slices in a mixture of flour, cornmeal, salt, and pepper before frying. This coating will help the tomatoes to brown and crispy.
  • Use a large skillet or griddle to fry the tomatoes. This will allow you to cook them in batches without overcrowding the pan.
  • Heat the oil over medium-high heat before adding the tomatoes. The oil should be hot enough to sizzle when the tomatoes are added.
  • Cook the tomatoes in batches for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan, as this will prevent the tomatoes from cooking evenly.
  • Drain the fried tomatoes on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Serve the fried green tomatoes immediately, or store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Conclusion:

Fried green tomatoes are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as an appetizer, side dish, or main course. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you prefer them crispy or soft, spicy or mild, there is a fried green tomato recipe out there for everyone.
