My great grandmother used to serve onions and apples with pork quite often. This is as close as I could get to hers, but she usually used an iron skillet.

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 large onions, sliced
2 Tbsp butter, melted
6 large cooking apples, unpeeled and sliced
1/2 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp paprika
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • 1. Saute the onions in melted butter in a large saucepan over medium heat until tender.
  • 2. Place the apple slices on top of the onions. Combine the brown sugar and the remaining ingredients. Sprinkle over the apple slices. Cover and simmer for 12 to 14 minutes.
  • 3. Uncover and simmer an additional 5 minutes or until the apple slices are tender. Serve with a slotted spoon.

Tips:

  • Choose the right kind of apples: Use firm, tart apples such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn. These apples will hold their shape and not become mushy when cooked.
  • Slice the apples thinly: This will help them cook evenly and quickly.
  • Use a large skillet: This will help prevent the apples and onions from overcrowding and steaming instead of frying.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet: Cook the apples and onions in batches if necessary.
  • Cook the apples and onions until they are tender and browned: This will take about 10-15 minutes.
  • Season the apples and onions with salt and pepper: to taste.
  • Serve the apples and onions immediately: They are best enjoyed fresh out of the skillet.

Conclusion:

Fried apples and onions are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a side dish, an appetizer, or even a main course.
