Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 2

1 large onion
1/4 cup vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Slice onion as thinly as possible, more like a shave than a cut, across width. (You may need to use a meat slicer or food processor fitted with a 1 millimeter blade to slice it this fine.)
  • Heat oil in a small skillet. Working in small batches, fry onions, constantly shaking the pan, just until crispy and golden, about 3 minutes. Remove onions with tongs or a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

FRENCH FRIED ONIONS

A homemade alternative to the Durkee® brand. I use these for casserole recipes. I will never buy store-bought French fried onions again. This recipe makes a lot! I often just use one onion and about 1/2 cup of milk and 1 cup of flour with seasonings if I just want to use them for one dish. Warning: You may have to make what the original recipe calls for because they are so yummy and you won't be able to stop eating them!

Tips:

- Use yellow or white onions for the best results. - Slice the onions thinly and evenly so that they cook evenly. - Soak the onion slices in cold water for 30 minutes before frying to remove some of the sharpness. - Use a large skillet or Dutch oven to fry the onions so that they have plenty of room to spread out. - Heat the oil over medium heat before adding the onions. - Stir the onions frequently so that they cook evenly and don't burn. - Cook the onions until they are golden brown and crispy. - Drain the onions on paper towels to remove excess oil. - Season the onions with salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. - Use fried onions as a topping for burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, and other dishes.
