German-Style Spinach (Or Chard) image

One of those handwritten things, which has been in my folder forever. Since we have a bumper crop of swiss chard, it is appearing regularly on the table. Not German, but I frequently add Feta Cheese when served.

Time 30m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 (10 ounce) packages frozen chopped spinach
1 large onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons butter (or margarine)
6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
pepper

Steps:

  • Cook spinach according to package directions.
  • Drain well and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, saute onion and garlic in butter until tender.
  • Stir in spinach, bacon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  • Heat through.

Tips:

  • Choose fresh, tender spinach for the best flavor and texture. Wilted or yellowing spinach will not taste as good and will not cook evenly.
  • Wash the spinach thoroughly before cooking to remove any dirt or grit. This will help ensure that your dish is clean and free of debris.
  • Cook the spinach over medium heat to prevent it from becoming overcooked and mushy. Overcooked spinach will lose its vibrant green color and will not be as flavorful.
  • Add a little bit of water or broth to the pan when cooking the spinach to help it steam and cook evenly. This will also help to prevent the spinach from sticking to the pan.
  • Season the spinach to taste with salt, pepper, and other desired herbs and spices. Common seasonings for spinach include garlic, onion, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
  • Serve the spinach immediately after cooking to preserve its flavor and texture. Leftover spinach can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Conclusion:

German-style spinach is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a side dish or as a main course. It is a healthy and nutritious choice that is packed with vitamins and minerals. With its simple ingredients and easy preparation, German-style spinach is a great option for busy weeknight meals. Whether you are a seasoned cook or a beginner, you are sure to enjoy this classic German dish.
