This is an easy to make creamy pasta dish, that I usually have all the ingredients for on hand. It is comfort food at it's best! My Grandma Smith raised 10 children on this recipe and my 3 year old loves it, very kid-friendly. I usually use whole wheat pasta for extra fiber and nutrition.

Grandma's Hot Tuna Casserole image

One night when I went to visit my dad, my grandma had made this tuna casserole for dinner. I had never had tuna casserole before and after tasting it, I fell in love. My sister and I asked for the recipe so we can make it ourselves at home. When we made it, it came out just as good as hers.

Grandma's Tuna Casserole with Potato Chips and No Noodles image

This is my grandma's recipe. My dad calls it "Toucan Tuna Casserole" because it uses two cans of everything. It is uncommon among tuna casserole recipes because it uses potato chips instead of noodles. Serve with Worcestershire sauce.

Tips:

  • Choose the right canned tuna. Solid white albacore or chunk light tuna are both good choices for this casserole. Avoid using flaked tuna, as it will make the casserole too mushy.
  • Use a variety of vegetables. This recipe calls for frozen peas and carrots, but you can also add other vegetables, such as corn, green beans, or chopped celery.
  • Don't overcook the tuna. Tuna is a delicate fish, so it's important not to overcook it. Flake the tuna with a fork just until it's cooked through.
  • Use a good quality cheese. The cheese is one of the main ingredients in this casserole, so it's important to use a good quality cheese that melts well. Cheddar, mozzarella, or Parmesan are all good choices.
  • Serve the casserole hot. This casserole is best served hot out of the oven. It can be reheated, but it's not as good.

Conclusion:

Grandma's Hot Tuna Casserole is a classic comfort food dish that is easy to make and loved by people of all ages. It's a great way to use up leftover tuna, and it's also a budget-friendly meal. With its creamy sauce, tender tuna, and cheesy topping, this casserole is sure to be a hit at your next potluck or family gathering.
