MIDWESTERN GRILLED BRATWURST SANDWICHES WITH CARAWAY SAUERKRAUT

Midwestern Grilled Bratwurst Sandwiches with Caraway Sauerkraut image

Ask a Wisconsin purist -- tradition demands that these sausages be served on a toasted hard roll (not a hot dog bun), with butter, spicy mustard (not ketchup), sweet pickles (not lettuce), and sauerkraut.

BRATWURST AND ONIONS

Bratwurst and Onions image

This is my traditional way of making Brats. We use wild game meet brats that is put together by our butcher. I get it ground in packages, and then I make patties out of it. You can also use linked brats jsut the same! We love this with gravy, rice/spaetzle and red cabbage... It is definitely one of our monthly must haves!

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality bratwurst: Look for bratwurst made with fresh, high-quality pork and spices. Avoid bratwurst that contains fillers or artificial ingredients.
  • Grill the bratwurst over medium heat: This will help prevent the bratwurst from burning on the outside while remaining raw on the inside.
  • Turn the bratwurst frequently: This will help ensure that the bratwurst cooks evenly on all sides.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the bratwurst: The bratwurst is fully cooked when it reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Serve the bratwurst on a sturdy bun: This will help prevent the bun from getting soggy from the bratwurst juices.
  • Top the bratwurst with your favorite toppings: Some popular toppings include sauerkraut, grilled onions, and mustard.
