THE BEST SLOPPY JOES
This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Steps:
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

SLOPPY JOES
This simple version of sloppy Joes, the classic sandwich served in school cafeterias and at kitchen counters across the country, comes together in about 20 minutes and can be made with ground beef, chicken or turkey. As the name suggests, they are messy, so serve with a fork and plenty of napkins.

MY FAMILY'S FAVORITE SLOPPY JOES (PIZZA JOES)
I've tried many recipes, this is the best. I once 'dec-tupled' (10x) this recipe to sell sandwiches at a craft fair at my church. People were waiting in line to buy leftovers. Freezes well, goes up to the lake or camping well and is a hit on Halloween...it's no-fail. Easy to double, triple, etc. I've been making Joes this way for over 20 years. ***03-08-09, I just reinvented this recipe tonight when I went to make it for dinner and found I didn't have an 8-oz. can of tomato sauce (shame on me). The family was upset with me when I subbed an 8-oz. can of pizza sauce and told them to suck it up and call them 'Pizza Joes' and then served them up with shredded mozzarella cheese on the toasted buns, top and bottom. They loved it. I left out the BBQ sauce in this preparation and just used a 1/2 cup ketchup. Pizza Joes are good to go!

Tips:
- Use a combination of ground beef and pork for a more flavorful sloppy joe. Be sure to drain off any excess grease before adding the mixture to the sauce.
- Don't be afraid to experiment with different spices and seasonings. A little bit of chili powder, garlic powder, or onion powder can go a long way in enhancing the flavor of the sloppy joes.
- If you want a sweeter sloppy joe, add a bit of brown sugar or ketchup to the sauce. For a tangier sloppy joe, add some mustard or vinegar.
- Let the sloppy joes simmer for at least 30 minutes, or even longer if you have time. This will allow the flavors to meld and develop.
- Serve sloppy joes on hamburger buns or slider buns. You can also use them as a filling for tacos or burritos.
Conclusion:
Sloppy joes are a quick, easy, and delicious meal that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They're perfect for a casual get-together or a weeknight dinner. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make a sloppy joe that will be the hit of your next party.
