KITTENCAL'S OVEN-BAKED BROWN RICE

Kittencal's Oven-Baked Brown Rice image

If you love brown rice then try this recipe, the rice bakes out perfect all the time! if you are using a highly-salted broth then you may want to reduce the salt slightly, for extra heat add in some cayenne pepper --- I also like to add in a few small bay leaves for added flavor ---- the recipe may be reduced to half, for vegetarian use vegetable broth or water and olive oil in place of butter --- this may also be made without the onion and garlic, see note on bottom.

Tips:

  • Choose the right rice: Use a medium-grain white rice, such as Calrose or Arborio, for best results. These types of rice have a higher starch content, which helps them to brown and become slightly sticky when cooked.
  • Rinse the rice thoroughly: This helps to remove the starch from the surface of the rice, which prevents it from becoming gummy when cooked.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed pot: A heavy-bottomed pot will help to distribute the heat evenly and prevent the rice from burning.
  • Brown the rice before adding the liquid: This step is essential for developing the nutty flavor of the rice. Cook the rice, stirring constantly, until it is evenly browned.
  • Use a flavorful cooking liquid: Chicken broth, vegetable broth, or water can be used to cook the rice. For a more flavorful dish, use a combination of broth and water.
  • Cook the rice until it is tender: The rice is cooked when it is tender and has absorbed all of the liquid. This usually takes about 18-20 minutes.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork before serving: This helps to separate the grains of rice and make it light and fluffy.

Conclusion:

Browning the rice before cooking is a great way to add flavor and texture to this classic dish. The garlic and onion add even more flavor, making this a delicious and easy side dish that can be served with a variety of main courses. Experiment with different herbs and spices to create your own unique flavor combinations.
