3 tablespoons lard
2 white onions, minced
2 tablespoons paprika
1 pound beef stew meat
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste
½ (6 ounce) can tomato paste
7 ounces water
4 cloves garlic, crushed
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon dried marjoram

Steps:

  • Melt lard in a pot over high heat. Add onions; cook and stir until browned, about 15 minutes. Remove pot from heat, add paprika, and stir quickly to combine with onions and prevent burning.
  • Add meat to the pot and place over high heat. Cook and stir until browned on all sides, 5 to 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add tomato paste and stir to combine. Add water, garlic, and cumin. Reduce heat to low and cover the pot. Cook, stirring occasionally, until meat is very soft, at least 1 1/2 hours. Stir in marjoram and cook another 10 minutes.

1 (26 ounce) can spaghetti sauce (Hunt's Italian no sugar added)
1/4 cup onion (chopped)
1/4 cup green pepper (chopped)
1 (4 ounce) can mushrooms
1 teaspoon garlic powder

Steps:

  • Cook turkey, onions, and green peppers in the microwave, drain and add sauce.
  • Cook macaroni according to package directions and drain.

1 pound lean ground turkey
1 (14 ounce) can stewed, diced tomatoes
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup tomato sauce
2 teaspoons white sugar
½ teaspoon dried basil
1 (16 ounce) package bow tie pasta

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the turkey until browned.
  • Stir in the stewed tomatoes, garlic, tomato sauce, sugar and basil, and then simmer for about 20 minutes.
  • Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente, and then drain. Combine the pasta and turkey mixture; toss and serve.

This is another passed down family recipe. A favorite of Northerners and, with a few tweaks, lower in fat.

1 lb ground turkey
1 1/2 cups whole wheat elbow macaroni
1 (16 ounce) can stewed tomatoes
1 (15 ounce) can red kidney beans
1 cup onion, diced
1 teaspoon margarine
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tablespoon pepper

Steps:

  • Brown onions in margarine in a large skillet. Add ground turkey and brown.
  • While this is cooking, cook macaroni according to directions.
  • Drain and rinse the turkey and mix in seasonings. Drain the macaroni. Place both in large skillet.
  • Add all the ingredients using only 1/2 the can of tomatoes until it cooks a little while. Add the rest and simmer 15 minutes.
