Time 1h15m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

8 ounces uncooked elbow macaroni
1 (6 ounce) carton whipped cream cheese with chives
2 lbs ground beef
1 -2 onion, thinly sliced
2 (8 ounce) cans tomato sauce
4 1/2 teaspoons salt (I used only 2 tsp.)
1 tablespoon sugar
1 egg
1 cup sour cream

Steps:

  • Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain.
  • Add cream cheese; toss to until melted.
  • Transfer to a greased 13x9 baking dish.
  • In a skillet, cook beef and onions over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain.
  • Add tomato sauce, salt and sugar; mix well.
  • Spread over macaroni mixture.
  • Combine egg and sour cream; spread over meat mixture.
  • Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 45 minute.

Tips:

  • Choose the right pasta. Elbow macaroni is the classic choice for macaroni royale, but you can also use other small, tube-shaped pasta like penne or rigatoni.
  • Cook the pasta al dente. This means cooking it until it is tender but still has a slight bite to it. Overcooked pasta will be mushy and will not hold its shape well in the casserole.
  • Use a flavorful cheese. A good quality cheddar or Gruyère cheese will give the macaroni royale a rich and creamy flavor. You can also use a combination of cheeses, such as cheddar and Parmesan.
  • Don't overmix the batter. Overmixing the batter will make the macaroni royale tough. Mix the ingredients just until they are combined.
  • Bake the macaroni royale until it is golden brown and bubbly. This will take about 30 minutes. If you are using a glass baking dish, you may need to cover it with foil during baking to prevent the top from getting too brown.
  • Let the macaroni royale cool slightly before serving. This will help it to set and make it easier to slice.

Conclusion:

Macaroni royale is a delicious and versatile dish that can be served as a main course or a side dish. It is perfect for potlucks and picnics, and it can also be made ahead of time and reheated. With its cheesy, creamy flavor and crispy breadcrumb topping, macaroni royale is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it.
