Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb. ground beef
¼ cup finely diced onion ((frozen is fine))
1 clove garlic, minced (or ⅛ teaspoon dried garlic powder)
¾ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Dash of black pepper
For serving: sandwich buns

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, onion and garlic until the meat is no longer pink. Drain.
  • Whisk together the remaining ingredients to make the sauce. Add to the skillet with the beef, onion and garlic.
  • Simmer uncovered over low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring regularly, until the mixture reaches desired consistency. You can keep the skillet covered if you like the sauce "sloppier." If the sauce is too thick, gradually stir in a small amount of warm water or beef broth. If the sauce is too thin, gradually sift in a small amount of flour while stirring vigorously to thicken.

MOMMA'S SLOPPY JOES

Momma's Sloppy Joes image

My mom has been making this basic sloppy joe recipe for so long that when I asked her how she made them, she had to make a batch to be sure of the measurements. These are no fancy joes - nothing but lots of sloppy, zesty mess! Beef may be used instead of turkey. Perfect for potluck or game day. Serve on your favorite buns.

Just as easy as opening "one of those cans" or packet mixes, only MUCH better! (I'm sure much healthier, too.) *The sauce is also very good as a homemade bbq sauce for chicken, ribs, pork chops, etc. Thanks, Mom! Enjoy!! :D

  • Add rest of ingredients, stir well to mix.
  • Simmer over low heat for 20 minutes or so, stirring ocaisionally.
  • Serve on warmed hamburger buns.
  • *If using as a bbq sauce, simmer ingredients in a small saucepan over low heat for about 15-20 minutes, stirring ocaisionally. Grill meat (chicken, etc.) til just done. Baste well with sauce and cook 3-5 minutes longer. Turning and basting.
  • If baking instead of grilling, the bbq-style sauce can be added to the raw meat and baked the entire time at 350 degrees til done.
