NEAT SLOPPY JOES

Neat Sloppy Joes image

No green pepper in this recipe, so it's a hit with kids. We added this to the menu at a children's camp, and it has been a favorite for several years. The mixture is thick, so they are 'neat' rather than sloppy. This freezes and reheats well.

Time 50m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 pounds lean ground beef
½ cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped celery
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
¼ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon white vinegar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
8 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Place ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until evenly browned, stirring to crumble. I like to use a potato masher to even out the lumps. Add onion and celery, cover the pan, and cook until tender and transparent, about 5 minutes. Drain off any grease.
  • Stir the tomato soup (undiluted), ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce into the beef mixture. Season with salt and garlic powder. Heat to a simmer over low heat, and cook until thoroughly heated, stirring frequently to prevent it from burning on the bottom.
  • Spoon the hot beef mixture onto buns, which may be toasted first, and serve.

THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

The Best Sloppy Joes image

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

RACHAEL RAY'S SUPER SCRUMPTIOUS SLOPPY JOES

Rachael Ray's Super Scrumptious Sloppy Joes image

This recipe is from Food Network's Rachael Ray. I like it b/c it uses tomato sauce instead of ketchup, and you can spice it up as you like. I add more onions as well as some garlic. * I like to use a little less brown sugar, as we like ours spicier rather than sweet.

SLOPPY SLOPPY JOES

Sloppy Sloppy Joes image

A good Sloppy Joe should be just that, sloppy. A little sweet with a little heat, this is a sandwich better enjoyed with a fork and knife. This method reduces the onion (especially once cooked) to a soft pulp, imparting plenty of flavor but little texture. For the savory notes, a blend of smoked paprika, chili powder, yellow mustard and cumin provide deep, smoky flavors. These are balanced by the sweetness and acidity of the tomatoes and vinegar. Adding pickled hot or sweet peppers (such as jalapeno or Peppadew) offers superior flavor. And by tossing them in the processor with the onions, their flavor is uniform. If for some reason there are leftovers, consider tossing them with warm pasta for an amazing second-day dish.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ground beef: Opt for lean ground beef (80/20 or 90/10) to reduce excess grease. You can also use ground turkey or chicken as healthier alternatives.
  • Sauté the vegetables: Before adding the beef, sauté diced onions, bell peppers, and garlic in a pan with olive oil. This step enhances the flavor and adds texture to the sloppy joes.
  • Use homemade tomato sauce: Instead of store-bought sauce, create your own using crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and seasonings. This allows you to control the taste and adjust the spiciness level.
  • Add a touch of sweetness: A small amount of brown sugar or honey balances the tanginess of the tomatoes and adds a hint of sweetness to the sloppy joes.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When cooking the beef, avoid overcrowding the pan. This prevents even cooking and can result in steamed meat.
  • Simmer the sauce: After combining all the ingredients, let the sloppy joe mixture simmer for at least 15-20 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and develop.
  • Toast the buns: Toasting the hamburger buns adds a crispy texture and enhances the overall taste of the sloppy joes.
  • Serve with your favorite toppings: Offer a variety of toppings such as shredded cheese, sliced pickles, diced onions, and jalapeños. This allows everyone to customize their sloppy joes according to their preferences.

Conclusion:

With careful attention to ingredient selection, cooking techniques, and presentation, you can create mouthwatering sloppy joes that are sure to please everyone at your table. Experiment with different toppings and sides to find the perfect combination that suits your taste buds. Whether you prefer classic sloppy joes or enjoy experimenting with unique variations, this versatile dish is a perfect addition to your culinary repertoire.
