PERFECTION SALAD- GRANDMA'S VERSION

Perfection Salad- Grandma's Version image

Perfection Salad was invented in 1905 when Knox gelatin ran a recipe contest. A Pennsylvania woman won 3rd place with this salad and, now her salad is famous and the other 2 recipes that got the higher awards are unknown. You never know. :) Here is my Grandma's version of Perfection Salad. I understand it is a little different...

PERFECTION SALAD

A family recipe dating back to the early part of the 20th century, by my great-grandmother. I have a tendency to think of this as Grandpa's salad, because he always prepared it for us. My mom and sister still make it for our holiday family gatherings, although now we usually use sugarfree Jello. (I've recently discovered that Perfection Salad is not something unique to our family - there are a lot of old recipes on net for it. They're generally similar to the one below.)

Time 20m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup boiling water
1 (3 ounce) package lemon Jell-O gelatin
2 tablespoons vinegar or 2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup cold water
1 cup finely diced celery
1 cup finely shredded cabbage
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
2 tablespoons chopped pimiento
mayonnaise (Best Foods, Helmann's, or Vegenaise)

Steps:

  • Pour boiling water over jello in bowl.
  • Stir until jello is disolved.
  • Stir in vinegar, veggies, salt, and cold water.
  • Pour into mold, chill until firm.
  • Serve unmolded on chilled plate, topped with a generous dollop of mayonnaise (family tradition of the last 30 years or so demands that you use Best Foods mayo brand - *never* Miracle Whip).
  • If preferred, use 1/2 cup celery and 1 cup grated carrot.
  • You can use sugar-free jello for a diabetic/lowcarb version of Perfection Salad. Sometimes lemon jello is difficult to find - we've sometimes used lime instead.

AMISH PERFECTION SALAD

A delicious take on jello. Although the combination may sound a bit on the odd side, it is extremely refreshing, especially on a hot summer day. Perfect for BBQs and Potlucks. For a "healthier" version, we use sugar-free jello (0.3 ounce package). **Chilling Time not included in Preparation**

Time 10m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 (3 ounce) package orange Jell-O
1 teaspoon sugar
1 cup boiling water
1 cup cold water
1/2 cup carrot, peeled and shredded
1/2 cup canned crushed pineapple, drained

Steps:

  • Mix together the Jell-O and sugar in a 9-inch glass pie plate.
  • Add boiling water and stir for at least 2 minutes, until fully dissolved.
  • Stir in the cold water and refrigerate 35 to 40 minutes, uncovered, until the Jell-O has set to a point between liquid and solid but is not fully firm.
  • Add the pineapple and carrots. (Adding the pineapple and carrots at this stage will cause the heavier pineapple to sink to the bottom and the lighter carrots to stay on top.).
  • DO NOT STIR.
  • Refrigerate until firm.

Tips:

  • Use fresh, ripe ingredients: The quality of your ingredients will greatly affect the taste of your salad. Choose fresh, ripe fruits and vegetables that are in season.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment: There are endless possibilities when it comes to salad recipes. Don't be afraid to experiment with different ingredients and flavors to find what you like.
  • Keep it simple: Sometimes, the simplest salads are the best. A few fresh, flavorful ingredients can be tossed together for a quick and delicious meal.
  • Use a variety of colors and textures: A visually appealing salad is more inviting to eat. Try to use a variety of colors and textures to create a salad that is both beautiful and delicious.
  • Don't overdress your salad: A little bit of dressing goes a long way. Overdressing your salad will make it soggy and unpleasant to eat.
  • Serve your salad immediately: Salads are best served immediately after they are made. This will prevent the ingredients from wilting or becoming soggy.

Conclusion:

Salads are a healthy and delicious way to get your daily dose of fruits and vegetables. With so many different recipes to choose from, there's sure to be a salad that everyone will enjoy. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give one of these salad recipes a try.
