5 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 cup sour cream

Tips

  • Use fresh ingredients: Baking is a science, and fresh ingredients will yield the best results. This is especially true for the sour cream, which should be fresh and not spoiled.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing can make the coffee cake tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Use a bundt pan: A bundt pan gives the coffee cake a beautiful shape and allows for even cooking.
  • Bake the coffee cake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean: This is the best way to ensure that the cake is cooked through.
  • Let the coffee cake cool before glazing: This will allow the glaze to set properly.
  • Serve the coffee cake warm or at room temperature: Sour cream coffee cake is best enjoyed when it's fresh out of the oven, but it can also be served at room temperature.
