Time 7h30m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 strips bacon, cut into small pieces
1 1/2 tablespoons flour
2 (1 1/2 lb) cans sauerkraut
3 lbs Polish sausage, cut in 1 1/2 inch pieces
2 small apples, cubed
1/2 cup beer
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons caraway seeds (optional)

Steps:

  • Fry bacon until crisp; drain.
  • Blend flour into bacon drippings.
  • Stir in sauerkraut.
  • Put sauerkraut mixture and bacon in slow electric cooker.
  • Add all other ingredients; stir together thoroughly.
  • Cover and cook on low 7 to 9 hours (or on high 3 to 4 hours).

Tips:

  • Choose a good quality sausage for the best flavor. Look for one that is made with fresh, ground pork and seasoned with a variety of spices.
  • Sauerkraut can be found in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores. If you can't find it, you can also use canned sauerkraut, but be sure to rinse it thoroughly before using.
  • Use a variety of apples in the recipe for a more complex flavor. Granny Smith apples are a good choice because they are tart and hold their shape well when cooked.
  • If you don't have caraway seeds, you can use fennel seeds or cumin seeds as a substitute.
  • Serve the sausage and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes, spaetzle, or your favorite side dish.

Conclusion:

Sausage and sauerkraut is a classic German dish that is perfect for a cold winter night. It is hearty, flavorful, and easy to make. With a few simple ingredients, you can create a delicious meal that the whole family will enjoy. So next time you're looking for a comforting and satisfying dish, give sausage and sauerkraut a try.
