Serbian Potato Salad image

A potato salad Serbian style. It is an oil and vinegar based salad rather than the creamy style more common in North America. Cooking time doesn't include the chilling time because it is up to you how long you want to chill it.

SERBIAN GROUND BEEF, VEGGIE, AND POTATO BAKE

Serbian Ground Beef, Veggie, and Potato Bake image

My boyfriend lived in Serbia for 3 years and always begs me to recreate some of his favorite dishes. Based on his sketchy explanations and a little research into Eastern European spices, I concocted this hearty and slightly spicy bake with ground beef, paprika, and vegetables like celery and peppers. Great with a glass of red wine!

Time 1h25m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 17

1 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 carrot, shredded
2 celery stalks, chopped
½ tablespoon paprika
½ teaspoon salt
¾ teaspoon black pepper
¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 pinch ground cinnamon
1 pinch ground cloves
¼ cup water
⅛ cup red wine
1 cube beef bouillon
2 tablespoons half-and-half
2 potatoes, peeled and sliced

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a casserole dish.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the beef until evenly brown. Remove beef from skillet, reserving juices, and set aside. Mix in the olive oil, and saute the green pepper, onion, carrot, and celery until tender.
  • Return beef to the skillet, and season with paprika, salt, black pepper, red pepper, cinnamon, and cloves. Stir in the water and red wine until heated through. Dissolve the beef bouillon cube into the mixture. Remove skillet from heat, and mix in the half-and-half.

Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes: Yukon Gold or russet potatoes are the best choices for Serbian potatoes, as they hold their shape well and have a fluffy texture.
  • Cut the potatoes evenly: This will ensure that they cook evenly.
  • Use a large skillet: A large skillet will prevent the potatoes from overcrowding and will help them to cook evenly.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet: If you overcrowd the skillet, the potatoes will not cook evenly.
  • Cook the potatoes over medium heat: This will help to prevent them from burning.
  • Stir the potatoes occasionally: This will help to ensure that they cook evenly.
  • Add the garlic and paprika at the end of cooking: This will help to prevent them from burning.
  • Season the potatoes to taste: Add salt, pepper, and paprika to taste.
  • Serve the potatoes immediately: Serbian potatoes are best served hot and fresh.

Conclusion:

Serbian potatoes are a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that is perfect for any occasion. They are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and they are full of flavor. Serbian potatoes are a great way to use up leftover potatoes, and they are also a great way to add some variety to your next meal.
