I threw this together in my crock pot one day and we loved it! A little time consuming because I sauteed the vegetables and browned the meat first, but it's well worth it. Browning the meat first gives it a better flavor. This is great with mashed potatoes!

SLOW COOKER SWISS STEAK

Slow Cooker Swiss Steak image

I got this from a magazine recently, I think it was Paula Deen's magazine. I've never used tomato of any kind in my Swiss Steak, but after I made this DH and I both decided we always want it this way! I serve this with mashed potatoes, but it will go well with noodles or rice, too.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cut of meat: Chuck roast or round steak are good options for Swiss steak, as they are both relatively inexpensive and have a good amount of marbling, which will help keep the meat moist during cooking.
  • Tenderize the meat: Pounding the meat with a meat mallet or using a meat tenderizer will help to break down the tough fibers and make the meat more tender.
  • Brown the meat before cooking: Browning the meat in a pan over medium-high heat will help to develop flavor and color. Be sure to brown the meat in batches, so that you don't overcrowd the pan and steam the meat.
  • Use a good quality Swiss cheese: Gruyère or Emmental are both good choices for Swiss steak, as they have a nutty, slightly sweet flavor that pairs well with the beef.
  • Cook the steak low and slow: Swiss steak is best cooked low and slow, either in a slow cooker or in the oven. This will allow the meat to become tender and the flavors to meld together.

Conclusion:

Swiss steak is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. By following these tips, you can make a delicious and tender Swiss steak that your family and friends will love.
