Steps:
- Heat oil in large deep skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring frequently 2 minutes. Add rice and cook, stirring to coat with oil, until rice begins to brown, 5-8 minutes. Stir in garlic and cumin and cook 1 minute longer.
- Add remaining ingredients and heat to boiling. Reduce heat, cover skillet, and simmer 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand covered 10 minutes. Fluff rice gently with fork and transfer to serving dish.
Tips:
- Use high-quality ingredients: The better the quality of your ingredients, the better your Sonoran rice will be. Look for fresh, flavorful vegetables and high-quality rice.
- Rinse the rice: Rinsing the rice removes excess starch, which helps to prevent the rice from clumping together.
- Toast the rice: Toasting the rice before cooking it gives it a nutty flavor and helps to prevent it from sticking to the pot.
- Use a heavy-bottomed pot: A heavy-bottomed pot will help to distribute the heat evenly and prevent the rice from burning.
- Cook the rice over low heat: Cooking the rice over low heat will help to prevent it from overcooking and becoming mushy.
- Let the rice rest before serving: Letting the rice rest for a few minutes before serving allows the flavors to meld together.
