Time P1DT20m

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 fresh mint leaves
1 tablespoon mint simple syrup (see recipe below)
crushed ice
2 tablespoons Bourbon (Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select Bourbon recommended)
1 fresh mint sprig
powdered sugar (optional)
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
10 -12 fresh mint sprigs

Steps:

  • To make the Mint Simple Syrup, bring the sugar and water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Boil, stirring often, for 5 minutes or until sugar dissolves.
  • Remove from heat, add mint, and let cool completely.
  • Pour syrup into a glass jar, then cover and chill 24 hours. Remove the mint and discard.
  • To make the drink, place mint leaves and Mint Simple Syrup in a chilled julep cup. Gently press the leaves against the cup with the back of a spoon to release flavors.
  • Pack the cup tightly with crushed ice and pour the bourbon over ice. Insert a 4-inch cocktail straw, place mint sprig directly next to straw, and sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired.
  • Serve immediately.

Tips:

  • Use fresh mint. Fresh mint is essential for a great mint julep. If you can, grow your own mint or buy it from a farmers market.
  • Chill your ingredients. All of the ingredients in a mint julep should be chilled before assembling the drink. This will help to keep the julep refreshing and flavorful.
  • Use a julep cup or a highball glass. A julep cup is the traditional vessel for a mint julep, but a highball glass will work just as well.
  • Don't over-muddle the mint. When muddling the mint, be gentle. You don't want to bruise the mint leaves too much, or they will release a bitter flavor.
  • Add the simple syrup to taste. The amount of simple syrup you add will depend on your personal preference. Start with a small amount and add more to taste.
  • Garnish with a mint sprig. A mint sprig is the perfect finishing touch for a mint julep. It adds a pop of color and flavor to the drink.

Conclusion:

The mint julep is a classic Southern cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. It's refreshing, flavorful, and easy to make. With a few simple tips, you can make the perfect mint julep at home. So next time you're looking for a refreshing and delicious cocktail, give the mint julep a try. You won't be disappointed.
