Important Note: All Recipes are made with Jalapeno

Cooking Jalapeno

  • Roaster Jalapeno- Place on a sheet pan and put in broiler until charred then roast them turning every few minutes. Keep them whole until the skins have blackened and are completely charred. You can also char them on a stove top in a skillet.
  • Microwave- Clean jalapenos and cut off the stems. Place them in a glass bowl and microwave them on high for 30 seconds to a minute or until the skin bubbles and blackens in some areas.
  • Sauté- Sautéing is a good way to enhance the smoky-spicy notes of the peppers. Slice jalapenos into ¼-inch-thick pieces and place in a hot skillet with some cooking oil. Sauté over medium heat until they start to char. You can add some herbs like cumin and thyme to add an extra layer of fragrance.

Preparation

  • Wear Gloves- Capsaicin, the active ingredient in jalapeno that makes them spicy, can cause a severe skin reaction. So wear kitchen-grade hand protection when cutting and working with jalapenos. Wear safety goggles and avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and food.
  • Carefully choose Jalapenos- Look for firm, plump, and fresh jalapenos that are deep green in color without any wrinkles or blemishes.
  • Store Jalapenos- For best results, store them in a paper bag rather than plastic bags in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. This will prevent the build-up of ethylene gas which promotes quick spoiling.
  • Properly clean and cut the Jalapenos- First, remove the capsaicin-rich jalapeno ribs and seeds by cutting the peppers in half lengthwise and cleaning them with a spoon. This will help reduce the heat levels.

Conclusion

Many cooking methods can enhance the deliciousness of jalapenos. From charring the skin to infusing them with aromatic spices and condiments, you can incorporate these spicy powerhouses into a wide range of culinary delights. So, grab some jalapenos, put on your culinary thinking cap, and embark on a flavorful culinary expedition.
