SPICY TURKEY SLOPPY JOES

This is adapted from a recipe I found in the local newspaper. It's adapted to fit my low-sodium requirements and spiced up to add flavor!

Provided by Tracy Q

Categories     Turkey

Number Of Ingredients 14

3-4 Tbsp olive oil
1 large yellow onion, diced
1 1/2 lb ground turkey
1 tsp black pepper
1 Tbsp minced garlic
1-2 tsp prepared horseradish
1 c no salt added ketchup
1 can(s) tomato paste, small
1/4 c mustard (spicy or specialty, preferred)
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (or more, if you like)
1/8 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (or more, if you like)
1 Tbsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
burger or slider buns

Steps:

  • 1. In a large skillet, sauté onion and garlic in olive oil, about 3-4 minutes. Add ground turkey and black pepper. Cook for 7-8 minutes, breaking up turkey into small pieces.
  • 2. Add ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, brown sugar, and horseradish, mixing well. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • 3. Add red wine vinegar. Serve on burger or slider buns. Makes enough for about four full-size sandwiches or eight sliders.

Tips:

  • To add a smoky flavor to your sloppy joes, use a chipotle pepper in adobo sauce. Adjust the amount of pepper depending on your desired level of heat.
  • If you don't have any tomato sauce, you can use crushed tomatoes or tomato paste instead. Just add a little bit of water or broth to thin it out.
  • For a vegetarian version of this recipe, you can substitute crumbled tofu or tempeh for the ground turkey.
  • To make your sloppy joes even more flavorful, brown the ground turkey in a skillet over medium heat before adding it to the slow cooker.
  • Serve your sloppy joes on toasted buns or rolls. You can also use them as a filling for tacos, burritos, or quesadillas.

Conclusion:

This spicy turkey sloppy joes recipe is a quick and easy meal that's perfect for busy weeknights. The ground turkey makes it a healthier option than traditional sloppy joes, and the chipotle pepper adds a smoky flavor that will tantalize your taste buds. Serve them on toasted buns or rolls, and enjoy!
