Steel-cut oats, also known as pinhead oats or Irish oats, are a type of whole grain oat that is less processed than rolled oats or instant oats. They have a chewy texture and a nutty flavor, and they are a good source of fiber, protein, and iron. Adding ground flax seed to steel-cut oats can boost their nutritional value even further. Flax seed is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, and fiber. When combined, steel-cut oats and ground flax seed make a delicious and nutritious breakfast or snack.

THE ONLY BASIC STEEL-CUT OATS RECIPE YOU'LL EVER NEED

The Only Basic Steel-Cut Oats Recipe You'll Ever Need image

Our foolproof, basic steel-cut oatmeal recipe is the perfect building block for an ultra-nutritious breakfast. Memorize the ratio-3 parts liquid to 1 part oats-then customize your bowl with a delicious array of fresh toppings. Cinnamon and honey keep things sweet and simple, but there's plenty of space to spice up your bowl with exotic combos-try cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, or ginger. And yes, steel-cut oats take longer to cook than other types of oats, but their toothsome texture and nutty flavor make them well-worth the effort. Best of all, they reheat beautifully, so you can easily cook up a big batch ahead of time. For a richer, nuttier flavor, try toasting your oats in the pan first. Keep the heat at medium-low and stir constantly to prevent burning. Short on time? Our basic oatmeal recipe is your go-to healthy breakfast for busy mornings.

STEEL-CUT OATS

Steel-Cut Oats image

These are nuttier, tastier, and healthier than prepackaged oatmeal.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Breakfast & Brunch Recipes

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 5

2/3 cup steel-cut oats
1/3 cup milk
Coarse salt
Light brown sugar
Toppings (optional), such as banana chips, sliced apricots, or toasted nuts

Steps:

  • The night before: In a 2-quart saucepan, bring 2 1/2 cups water to a boil. Add 2/3 cup steel-cut oats (not quick-cooking). Stir, let cool to room temperature. Cover; refrigerate in pan overnight.
  • In the morning: Add 1/8 teaspoon coarse salt to pan; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, and simmer until oats are tender but still chewy, 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in 1/3 cup milk, and cook until creamy, 2 to 3 minutes. Divide between 2 bowls. Spoon on light-brown sugar and toppings (such as banana chips or sliced apricots), if desired. For a crunchy texture, add toasted nuts.

Tips:

  • Choose the right oats: Steel-cut oats are the best choice for this recipe because they retain their texture and chewiness during cooking.
  • Use a good quality ground flaxseed: Make sure the flaxseed is fresh and finely ground. This will help it blend smoothly into the oats.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When cooking the oats, make sure to use a large enough pan so that the oats have plenty of room to spread out. This will help them cook evenly.
  • Stir the oats frequently: Stirring the oats frequently will help prevent them from sticking to the bottom of the pan and burning.
  • Be patient: Steel-cut oats take longer to cook than rolled oats, so be patient and allow them to cook for the full amount of time.

Conclusion:

Steel-cut oats with ground flaxseed is a delicious and nutritious breakfast option that is packed with fiber, protein, and healthy fats. It is also a very versatile dish that can be topped with a variety of different ingredients, such as fruits, nuts, and seeds. Whether you are looking for a quick and easy breakfast or a more substantial meal, steel-cut oats with ground flaxseed is a great choice.
