This is so yummy!! A family favorite! We usually have this at the holidays, but also at Presidents day coming up! It would also be a lovely dessert for Valentines Day. I believe the original source was a Pillsbury Cookoff Booklet. Prep time is a guestimate. Cook time includes chilling time.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 c all purpose flour
1/2 c finely chopped nuts
1/4 c firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c margarine or butter, softened
FILLING:
1 8 ounce pkg. cream cheese, softened
1/2 tsp almond extract
1 c powdered sugar
1 21 ounce can of cherry pie filling
1 c whipping cream, whipped and sweetened*

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oven to 375. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. In ungreased 13 x 9 inch pan, combine first 4 ingredients. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown; stir once while baking. Reserve 1/2 cup crumbs for top. Using spoon, firmly press remaining warm crumb mixture into ungreased 9 or 10 inch pie pan. Chill Crust.
  • 2. In medium bowl, blend first 3 filling ingredients until smooth. Spread over crust. Fold fruit filling into whipped cream. Spoon over cream cheese layer. Sprinkle with reserved crumb mixture. Chill 1 to 2 hours before serving. Store in refrigerator.
  • 3. *TIP...VERY IMPORTANT! Do not use frozen whipped topping, such as cool whip in this recipe.

Tips:

  • Use fresh, ripe cherries. This will ensure that your pie has the best flavor. If you can't find fresh cherries, you can use frozen or canned cherries, but be sure to thaw them before using.
  • Pit the cherries before using them. You can use a cherry pitter or a knife to remove the pits. Be careful not to cut yourself.
  • Use a combination of sweet and tart cherries. This will give your pie a more complex flavor. If you only have one type of cherry, you can add a little bit of lemon juice to the filling to make it more tart.
  • Don't overcook the filling. The cherries should be soft, but they should still hold their shape. If you overcook the filling, it will become mushy.
  • Let the pie cool completely before serving. This will allow the filling to set and the crust to become flaky.

Conclusion:

Cherry pie is a classic American dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With its sweet and tart flavor, cherry pie is sure to be a hit at your next gathering. So next time you are looking for a delicious and easy dessert, give cherry pie a try!
