We opted for a nutty crumb topping over marshmallows to create a pleasantly crunchy contrast to the creamy and soft mashed sweet potatoes. The filling gets a pumpkin pie-like treatment, with brown sugar and vanilla for a deep caramel flavor and butter and eggs for richness. This recipe is bound to become a holiday staple.

Tips:

  • Choose the right sweet potatoes: Look for firm, unblemished sweet potatoes that are about the same size. This will ensure that they cook evenly.
  • Prick the sweet potatoes before baking: This will help the steam to escape and prevent the potatoes from bursting.
  • Bake the sweet potatoes until they are tender: You can check this by inserting a knife into the center of the potato. If it goes in easily, the potato is done.
  • Let the sweet potatoes cool slightly before handling: This will help to prevent them from breaking apart.
  • Use a food processor or mixer to mash the sweet potatoes: This will give you a smooth and creamy texture.
  • Add your favorite mix-ins: Some popular options include butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pecans.
  • Top the casserole with a pecan or streusel topping: This will add a crunchy texture and extra flavor.
  • Bake the casserole until it is bubbly and golden brown: This will take about 30 minutes.
  • Let the casserole cool slightly before serving: This will help it to set and make it easier to slice.
