SWISS CHEESE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE

Swiss Cheese Green Bean Casserole image

When I make this special-occasion veggie dish, I am ALWAYS asked for the recipe. Fresh steamed green beans provide a contrast to decadent melted Swiss cheese and crunchy topping. A family holiday favorite throughout my extended family. You can prepare ahead of time, leaving 4 to 5 minutes to steam the green beans and add other ingredients. Put into oven right before serving dinner (we usually put it in while carving the turkey).

Yield 4 servings.

Number Of Ingredients 5

3/4 pound bulk pork sausage
1 large onion, sliced
1 garlic clove, minced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound fresh green beans, cut into 2-inch pieces

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, cook and crumble sausage until no longer pink; drain and set aside. In the same pan, saute onion and garlic in oil until tender. Stir in beans; cover and cook over medium heat until beans are tender. Add sausage; heat through.

Nutrition Facts :

Tips:

  • Choose fresh, vibrant green beans: Look for beans that are firm and snap easily when broken. Avoid beans that are limp or have brown spots.
  • Trim the beans properly: Cut off the stem ends and any tough strings along the sides of the beans.
  • Blanch the beans briefly: This helps to preserve their bright green color and crisp texture.
  • Use a flavorful cooking liquid: A combination of water, chicken broth, and white wine adds a lot of flavor to the beans. You can also add other herbs and spices, such as garlic, thyme, and bay leaves.
  • Don't overcook the beans: Green beans are best when they are still slightly crisp. Overcooking will make them mushy.
  • Serve the beans warm or at room temperature: Green beans can be served as a side dish or as part of a main course. They are also great in salads and sandwiches.

Conclusion:

Swiss Green Bean Delight is a simple but flavorful dish that is perfect for any occasion. The beans are tender-crisp and coated in a creamy, cheesy sauce. This dish is sure to please everyone at your table.
