Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 pound elbow macaroni
1/4 cup thinly-sliced prosciutto - (2 oz)
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups milk
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Salt to taste
Freshly-ground black pepper to taste
1/2 cup grated Swiss cheese

Steps:

  • Cook the macaroni in plenty of salted water until al dente, about 8 minutes. Drain and cool. Mix together the prosciutto, cream, milk, Parmesan and nutmeg. Add the macaroni and season to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon into a 11- by 7 1/2-inch baking dish. Sprinkle grated Swiss cheese over the top. Bake at 400 degrees until the cheese is lightly browned, about 20 to 25 minutes. For a crustier top, place the dish under a broiler for a few minutes.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality cheese for the best flavor. A good combination is equal parts Gruyère, Emmental, and Appenzeller.
  • Grate your own cheese instead of using pre-shredded cheese. Freshly grated cheese melts more smoothly and evenly.
  • Cook the macaroni al dente so that it still has a slight bite to it. Overcooked macaroni will become mushy.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different ingredients. You can add cooked vegetables, herbs, or even bacon to your macaroni and cheese.
  • Serve your macaroni and cheese immediately after it's made. It's best when it's hot and gooey.

Conclusion:

Swiss macaroni and cheese is a delicious, comforting, and versatile dish that is perfect for any occasion. With its rich, cheesy flavor and crispy, browned top, it's a surefire hit with people of all ages. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give this classic recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
