Tips:

  • Choose the Right Potatoes: For the best Thai fries, select starchy potatoes like Russet or Idaho potatoes. These varieties hold their shape well during frying and produce a crispy exterior and fluffy interior.
  • Cut the Potatoes Evenly: Uniformly sized potato strips ensure even cooking and a consistent texture. Aim for strips that are about 1/4 inch thick and 2-3 inches long.
  • Soak the Potatoes: Soaking the potato strips in cold water for 30 minutes removes excess starch and helps them crisp up. This step also prevents the fries from sticking together during frying.
  • Dry the Potatoes Thoroughly: Before frying, pat the potato strips dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps achieve a crispy texture and prevents the oil from splattering.
  • Use High-Quality Oil: Choose a high-heat cooking oil with a neutral flavor, such as vegetable oil, canola oil, or peanut oil. Avoid using olive oil as it has a low smoke point and can burn easily.
  • Fry in Small Batches: Do not overcrowd the pan with potato strips as this will lower the oil temperature and result in soggy fries. Fry the potatoes in small batches to ensure they cook evenly and become crispy.
  • Season Generously: After frying, immediately season the Thai fries with salt, pepper, and your desired spices. This helps enhance the flavor and makes them irresistible.
  • Serve with Dipping Sauces: Thai fries pair wonderfully with various dipping sauces. Some popular options include sweet chili sauce, Sriracha mayonnaise, or a simple mixture of soy sauce and rice vinegar.

Thai fries are an irresistible treat that combines the flavors of classic fries with the unique zest of Thai spices. By following the tips and tricks outlined in this article, you can create perfectly crispy and flavorful Thai fries at home.
