There are a thousand ways to make chili, but this is the quintessential, totally classic version. We used ground beef, kidney beans and the perfect blend of spices. You can slather it on hot dogs and burgers or serve it as a dip, but it can surely stand on its own. Chances are, you have everything you need right in your pantry. 1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 pound ground beef chuck, preferably coarse grind (see Cook's Note)
1 large yellow onion, diced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons tomato paste

  • Top with sour cream, Cheddar and scallions. Serve with tortilla chips.

Tips for Making the Best Chili Ever

  • Choose the Right Meat: Use a combination of ground beef and ground pork for a flavorful and juicy chili. You can also use ground turkey or lamb for a healthier option.
  • Sauté the Vegetables: Sautéing the onions, peppers, and garlic in a little bit of oil before adding them to the chili pot enhances their flavor and creates a more complex base for the chili.
  • Use a Variety of Spices: Don't be afraid to experiment with different spices to create a chili with your own unique flavor profile. Some popular spices for chili include chili powder, cumin, oregano, and smoked paprika.
  • Add a Touch of Chocolate: A small amount of dark chocolate can add a rich, complex flavor to chili. Just be sure to use unsweetened chocolate so that the chili doesn't become too sweet.
  • Let the Chili Simmer: The longer you simmer the chili, the more time the flavors have to develop. Simmer the chili for at least 1 hour, or up to 4 hours for an even richer flavor.
  • Garnish with Fresh Herbs: When serving the chili, garnish it with fresh herbs such as cilantro, parsley, or green onions. This adds a pop of color and freshness to the dish.

Conclusion

Making the best chili ever is all about using fresh ingredients, taking the time to let the flavors develop, and experimenting with different spices and ingredients to create a dish that is uniquely your own. So next time you're in the mood for a bowl of chili, don't be afraid to get creative and try something new. You might just surprise yourself with how delicious your chili turns out!
