TRADITIONAL RICE STUFFING

Traditional Rice Stuffing image

My mother passed this recipe on to her daughters as it was passed on to her from her mother. It is a delicious alternative to traditional bread stuffing, and my family always requests it when a chicken or turkey is on the menu. It will be a stunning addition to your Sunday night dinner table. As with any good recipe, adjust the seasonings to your taste. This recipe quantity is for an approximately 5-pound chicken.

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 cup chestnuts
⅔ cup butter
¼ cup orange juice
¼ cup tangerine juice
⅔ cup lemon juice
1 (10 pound) whole turkey
salt and ground black pepper to taste
½ pound ground beef
½ pound ground pork
¼ cup chopped onion
½ cup uncooked instant rice
¼ cup pine nuts
¼ cup raisins
⅓ cup butter
½ cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons brandy
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  • Make a small incision on sides of each chestnut, and place in a skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring often, until toasted. Remove from heat, peel, and chop.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of breads for a more flavorful stuffing. Try using a combination of white bread, cornbread, and/or whole wheat bread.
  • Toast the bread cubes before adding them to the stuffing. This will help them absorb the flavors of the other ingredients and prevent them from becoming soggy.
  • Add plenty of vegetables to your stuffing. This will add flavor, texture, and nutrients. Some good options include celery, onion, carrots, mushrooms, and spinach.
  • Season your stuffing well. Use a combination of herbs, spices, and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Don't overstuff the turkey. The stuffing should be loosely packed so that it can cook evenly. Aim for about 3/4 cup of stuffing per pound of turkey.
  • Cook the stuffing until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. You can check the temperature with a meat thermometer.

Conclusion:

Traditional stuffing is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a great way to use up leftover bread and vegetables, and it can be easily customized to suit your own taste preferences. Whether you prefer a savory stuffing with sausage and herbs or a sweeter stuffing with dried fruits and nuts, there is a traditional stuffing recipe out there for everyone. So next time you are looking for a side dish to serve with your turkey or chicken, give traditional stuffing a try.
