UNSTUFFED CABBAGE ROLL CASSEROLE
From a free Penzey's recipe card... Edited 3/24/08 to add that I have now made this recipe for the first time. We really liked it, but found it a bit bland, so I doubled the amounts of vinegar and brown sugar and also added some ketchup to jazz it up a bit. Definitely a keeper, though!

SLOW COOKER CABBAGE ROLL CASSEROLE
Yummy and less work than the real cabbage rolls. There is no rice in this recipe, because I don't like rice in my cabbage rolls.

I love cabbage rolls but don't have the patience to put them together, so I prefer to combine all the ingredients casserole-style and bake. Same taste, easier prep! That's how we roll!

UNSTUFFED CABBAGE ROLL
This is a quick and easy main dish. My kids don't even like cabbage, but they love this. I usually try to serve it with green beans, new potatoes, corn, and a pan of corn bread. They eat over half the pan every time. Also, the longer it stands the better it tastes.

Forget trying to roll the cabbage rolls. I tried this once and realized that I didn't need to spend all that time making the rolls because they ended up looking the same on the plate anyways.

Tips:
- Use a large skillet to brown the beef and sausage. This will help prevent overcrowding and ensure that the meat is evenly cooked.
- Add a little bit of water or broth to the skillet while browning the beef and sausage. This will help prevent the meat from sticking to the pan and will also help to deglaze the pan, releasing any browned bits.
- Don't overcook the rice. The rice should be cooked through, but it should still have a little bit of a bite to it.
- Add the cooked rice, browned meat, and vegetables to a large casserole dish. Stir to combine.
- Pour the tomato sauce over the rice mixture. Spread the sauce evenly over the top.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top of the casserole. Bake the casserole for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve the casserole immediately. Top with additional shredded cheese, sour cream, or chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
Conclusion:
This unstuffed cabbage roll casserole is a delicious and easy-to-make meal that is perfect for a weeknight dinner. It is also a great way to use up leftover rice, cooked meat, and vegetables. The casserole is hearty and filling, and it is sure to be a hit with the whole family. This recipe is also very versatile. You can use any type of ground meat that you like, and you can also add or omit any vegetables that you don't care for. You can also adjust the amount of cheese that you use, depending on your preference.
