Time 50m

Yield 16 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/2 cups flour
3 tablespoons Dutch process cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon white vinegar
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup cold water

Steps:

  • Preheat 350 degrees F.
  • Place the dry ingredients in a bowl. Make 3 small holes in the mixture. Pour the vanilla in one hole, the vinegar in another and vegetable oil in another. Pour water over the top and mix. Pour into a lightly greased 8 by 8 inch pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.

Tips:

  • Mise en Place: Before starting, measure and prepare all ingredients and equipment. This will ensure a smooth baking process.
  • Use Room Temperature Ingredients: For optimal results, bring butter, eggs, and milk to room temperature before mixing. This helps ingredients blend together more easily, resulting in a smooth and even batter.
  • Creaming Butter and Sugar: Ensure butter and sugar are creamed together until light and fluffy. This incorporates air into the mixture, creating a light and airy cake.
  • Gradually Add Eggs: Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. This prevents the batter from curdling.
  • Sift Dry Ingredients: Sifting flour, baking powder, and salt together aerates them, resulting in a lighter cake. It also ensures even distribution of ingredients.
  • Use Proper Pan Size: Select a pan size specified in the recipe to ensure the cake bakes evenly and has the desired height.
  • Oven Temperature: Preheat the oven to the specified temperature before placing the cake in. This ensures even baking throughout.
  • Avoid Overmixing: Overmixing the batter can result in a tough, dense cake. Mix only until the ingredients are well combined.
  • Baking Time: Keep an eye on the cake during baking. Insert a toothpick or skewer into the center; if it comes out clean, the cake is done.
  • Cooling: Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting or decorating. This helps the cake set properly.
