BEST BREAD PUDDING WITH VANILLA SAUCE

Best Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce image

We found this recipe tucked inside my mom's Bible when going through her things. It has become a family tradition on the first snow day of the year and if that doesn't happen, which can be the case here in central Virginia, we know it'll be the featured dessert at Easter and anytime a comfort food is in order.

MULATE'S HOMEMADE BREAD PUDDING WITH BUTTER RUM SAUCE

Mulate's Homemade Bread Pudding With Butter Rum Sauce image

Recipe adapted from Alton Brown's cookbook "Feasting on Asphalt". This is an unusual bread pudding in that the texture is smooth, and dense with no evidence of the bread at all, almost like a tres leches cake because they make it from left over hamburger buns, which they soak in eggs and cream until the buns lose all form and shape. With hard sauce, the pudding is amazing.Mulate's is a restaurant in New Orleans.

A variation of bread and butter pudding from Worcestershire. The origin of the name is uncertain but could refer to the white habit of local nuns, because convents frequently provided food to travellers.

Tips:

  • Choose the right bread: Use a firm, slightly stale bread like a French baguette, Italian bread, or challah. This will help the bread absorb the custard without becoming soggy.
  • Don't overmix the custard: Overmixing the custard can make it tough. Stir just until the eggs and milk are well combined.
  • Use a deep baking dish: This will help the bread pudding rise evenly and prevent it from overflowing.
  • Bake the pudding until it is set: Insert a toothpick or knife into the center of the pudding. If it comes out clean, the pudding is done.
  • Let the pudding cool before serving: This will allow the flavors to develop and the pudding to firm up.

Conclusion:

White Ladies Pudding, Nun's Bread and Butter Pudding, and Spotted Dick are all classic British puddings that are easy to make and delicious to eat. With a few simple ingredients and a little time, you can create a dessert that will impress your family and friends. Serve it warm with custard, cream, or ice cream for a truly indulgent treat. Enjoy!
