Brown Sugar and Mustard Baked Ham image

This recipe may sound a bit strange, but my family has been making baked ham this way for generations and everyone loves it! It has a wonderful flavor and is so tender and never dry. It's always a huge hit and so simple to make. Prep and cooking time is based on a 6 pound ham, but any size ham can be used. The idea is to cover the ham with mustard and brown sugar, so amounts should be adjusted depending upon the size of the ham. I noticed in the nutrition information that shows one serving to be 1000 calories! I'm certain this is not correct and probably is figuring the bone in the serving size. Don't be afraid to try it! :-)

Time 2h10m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 (6 lb) bone-in ham
1 (12 ounce) can 7-Up soda or 1 (12 ounce) can ginger ale
1/4 cup yellow mustard
1/2 cup brown sugar

Steps:

  • Rinse ham in water. I find some brands of ham are saltier than others so ham can be soaked in water for one hour to prevent saltiness.
  • Pat ham dry and place flat (cut) side down in roasting pan.
  • Pour entire can of 7UP or ginger ale over ham.
  • Bake in 325°F oven for 20 minutes per pound.
  • Baste ham every 1/2 hour.
  • When there is about 20 minutes left to cook, take ham out and cover the entire ham (except the flat side) with yellow mustard. I just squirt it out of the bottle all over the ham and then spread it with a spatula. Then cover ham with the brown sugar. For this I usually use my hands.
  • Return ham to the oven until cooking time is finished. Do not baste after mustard and brown sugar have been added.
  • Put on platter and slice. Ham juices from pan can be served in a gravy boat to drizzle over sliced ham.
