Cottage Pudding - Upside Down Cake image

This is my husband's favorite. I first made it over thirty years ago. You can use canned peaches or pineapple in place of the sliced apples.

3 tablespoons butter, melted
½ cup packed brown sugar
3 apples - peeled, cored and sliced
½ cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup milk

Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt, stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the milk. Pour into the baking pan so that the fruit is completely covered.
