Number Of Ingredients 9

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
2 Tbsp baking powder
2 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 cup oil
2/3 cup milk
2 lb hot sausage

Steps:

  • Combine dry ingredients. Stir in oil until mixture resembles course crumbs. Add milk and stir until mixture forms a ball. Roll half of dough into 10"x18" rectangle. Spread with 1 lb sausage. Roll up as for jelly roll. Wrap in wax paper or plastic wrap. Repeat with remaining dough and sausage. Chill for several hours. (I sometimes will freeze the dough at this point if I'm making them ahead. Or partially freeze it to make the roll easier to cut.) Slice rolls into 1/4" rounds. Bake on ungreased baking sheet in 350 degree oven for 15 minutes, until slightly browned. Serve warm, but not hot.

Overall, I thought these sausage swirls were pretty good. They were easy to make and they tasted pretty good. I would definitely make them again.

These sausage swirls were a bit too spicy for my taste, but my husband loved them. I think I'll try using a milder sausage next time.

I made these sausage swirls for my family and they loved them! The only thing I would change is to use a different type of cheese. I think a cheddar cheese would be better than the mozzarella.

The sausage swirls were a bit bland. I think I'll add some more spices next time.

These sausage swirls were a bit too greasy for my taste. I think I'll try using a leaner sausage next time.
