Spicy Lentils With Mushrooms image

"Labhia aur khumbi" - modified from Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cooking (I think). (Originally used black-eyed beans, 6T oil and 250g mushrooms.)

2 tablespoons oil
1 large onion (chopped)
1 teaspoon cumin seed
2 1/2 cm cinnamon sticks
4 garlic cloves
100 g mushrooms (sliced)
400 g chopped tomatoes
250 g dried brown lentils
2 cups water
2 teaspoons ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
2 teaspoons salt
black pepper (optional)
3 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander

Steps:

  • Gently fry onion, cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, garlic, & mushrooms in oil.
  • Add remaining ingredients, except for salt and fresh coriander.
  • Simmer for about an hour.
  • Add salt and pepper.
  • Remove cinnamon stick.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander.

This recipe was a disaster! The lentils were mushy and the mushrooms were tough. I followed the recipe exactly, so I'm not sure what went wrong. Would not recommend.

Not a fan of lentils, but this recipe was surprisingly good! The mushrooms and spices really helped to mask the lentil flavor. I served it over quinoa and it was a very satisfying meal.

Delicious! I made this for dinner last night and it was a hit. The lentils were perfectly cooked and the mushrooms were so flavorful. I served it over rice and it was a perfect meal. Will definitely be making this again.

This recipe was a bit bland for my taste. I added some extra spices and herbs to give it more flavor. The lentils were also a bit mushy, so I would recommend cooking them for a shorter amount of time.

I followed the recipe exactly and the lentils were still a bit undercooked. I had to add some extra water and cook them for longer. Otherwise, the dish was very flavorful and satisfying.

Just made this and it was amazing! The lentils were perfectly cooked and the mushrooms were so tender. I added a bit of chopped parsley at the end for garnish and it really made the dish pop. Highly recommend!

Easy and delicious! I used cremini mushrooms and they worked great. I also added a bit of cayenne pepper for a little extra kick. Served it over quinoa and it was a hit with everyone at the table.
