This is an old fashioned recipe that my great grandmother used to mae.

Steps:
- 1. Combine the first 5 ingredients in a medium saucepan; stir well. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes or until the apple is tender.
- 2. Combine the cornstarch and 1 tablespoon water; add to the apple mixture, stirring well. Pour into a lightly greased 2-quart baking dish.
- 3. Combine the buttermilk, 1/4 cup sugar, molasses, oil, and egg in a small mixing bowl; beat at medium speed of an electric mixer until smooth.
- 4. Combine the flour and the remaining ingredients; stir well. Add to the buttermilk mixture, beating until blended. Pour the batter over the apple mixture.
- 5. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve warm.
