Time 50m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb ground beef, up to 1-1/2 lb
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup onion, chopped
1 cup green pepper, chopped
1 1/2 cups ketchup
2 1/2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef in skillet. Drain grease.
  • Add salt, onion & green pepper to beef in skillet. Simmer for 10 minutes until sweating and starting to get translucent.
  • Add remaining ingredients to skillet. Mix well. Taste. Adjust if necessary for personal tastes.
  • Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  • Serve on toast bread or hamburger buns.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ground beef: Use 80/20 ground beef for a flavorful and juicy sloppy joe. Leaner ground beef will result in a drier sandwich.
  • Brown the beef thoroughly: Cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until it is no longer pink. This will help to develop the flavor of the meat.
  • Use a variety of spices: Sloppy joes are a great opportunity to use up your favorite spices. Chili powder, cumin, paprika, and garlic powder are all classic additions.
  • Add some sweetness: Ketchup and brown sugar are two common ingredients that add sweetness to sloppy joes. You can also use molasses or honey.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment: There are many different ways to make sloppy joes. Feel free to add your own favorite ingredients or adjust the seasonings to your taste.

Conclusion:

Sloppy joes are a delicious and easy-to-make sandwich that is perfect for a weeknight meal. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a classic sloppy joe that the whole family will enjoy. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give sloppy joes a try!
