Time 22m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 11

¾ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup cornstarch
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 large onion, cut into rings
1 cup milk
1 egg
1 cup bread crumbs
cooking spray
2 pinches garlic powder
2 pinches paprika

Steps:

  • Stir flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt together in a small bowl. Dip onion rings into the flour mixture until coated; set aside.
  • Whisk milk and egg into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat. Place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping.
  • Place bread crumbs in a shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs and scoop the crumbs over the rings to coat evenly. Give rings a hard tap as you remove them from the crumbs; the coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Heat an air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) according to manufacturer's instructions. Place rings side by side in the frying basket. Spray lightly with cooking spray. Flip rings and place basket in the air fryer. Cook until rings are golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Flip once halfway through. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with garlic powder and paprika.

AIR FRYER ONION RINGS RECIPE

Air Fryer Onion Rings Recipe image

Using the air fryer results in onions rings that are crispy and crunchy without using a ton of oil. Here's a recipe that shows you how.

Provided by Leah Maroney

Categories     Side Dish     Snack

Time 26m

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 large sweet onions
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
2 cups panko breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons salt
Optional: creamy dipping sauces, honey mustard, or ketchup (for serving)

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients. Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat to 200 F.
  • Cut off both ends of the onions and peel off the skin.
  • Slice the onions into thick rings.
  • Carefully separate the rings from each other. Save the innermost rings for another recipe. If the rings break, you can still use them.
  • Prepare the 3 dredging bowls. Put the flour in 1 shallow bowl. Beat the eggs and milk in another shallow bowl. Add the panko breadcrumbs to a third shallow bowl. In a separate small bowl, mix the smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt, then divide the mixture evenly among the 3 bowls. Whisk each bowl to disperse the seasonings.
  • Dip the onion rings in the flour first. Completely coat both sides of the rings and the inner portion.
  • Dip the flour-coated rings into the egg mixture. Make sure to completely coat them with the egg so you cannot see any of the flour. You may need to flip the rings a few times.
  • Dip the rings in the breadcrumb mixture. To thoroughly coat them, use your fingers to press the breadcrumbs onto the rings.
  • Generously spray the inside of the air fryer with cooking spray. Carefully place a single layer of the onion rings into the air fryer and spray the tops with cooking spray. Cook on 375 F for 10 minutes, flipping each ring halfway through the cooking time.
  • Transfer the first batch to a baking sheet and place in the oven to keep warm. Cook the second batch of rings. Serve with creamy dipping sauce , honey mustard , and ketchup if desired.

You're in for a treat with these Crispy Fried Onions!

Provided by Sarah Cook - Sustainable Cooks

Categories     Side Dish

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 cups onion ({about 2 medium onions})
1 cup coconut milk
3/4 cup almond flour
1/3 cup potato starch
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp black pepper
2 tsp olive oil ({more for oven baking})

Steps:

  • Slice the onion in half and then make "ribbons" about 1/8 inch thick. Separate all the onions and add them to a bowl.
  • Pour milk over the onions and use a spoon to push down the onions so they're mostly covered by the milk. Let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, mix the dry ingredients in a lidded container. Set aside.
  • Drain the onions, shaking the excess milk off. Place onions in the flour mixture. Put the lid on and shake until the onions are coated.
  • Preheat air fryer at 400 degrees F for 5 minutes.
  • Using clean hands, remove the onion from the flour mixture and set aside. In another bowl, add the olive oil. Add the onions to the olive oil and stir or shake to coat.
  • Lightly brush the inside of the air fryer with olive oil and add the onions. Cook for 8 minutes, and then shake the basket to distribute the onions.
  • Cook for another 5 minutes. Pro tip: spritz with olive oil on top to keep the onions extra crispy!
  • Continue to cook in 3-minute increments until it has reached your desired level of crispiness (took 20 minutes total for me).
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • Follow steps 1-4 and 6 above.
  • For oven-baking, you'll need to use 1/4 cup olive oil.
  • Bake on rimmed baking sheet for 10 minutes. Stir, and bake an additional 10-15 minutes.

ONION STRINGS

Onion Strings image

Provided by Ree Drummond : Food Network

Categories     condiment

Time 1h20m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 large onions
2 cups buttermilk
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 scant tablespoon salt
Plenty of black pepper
1/4 to 1/2 tablespoon cayenne pepper
Canola oil, for frying

Steps:

  • Begin by peeling the onions and slicing very thinly, use a mandoline slicer if you can. Separate the onion slices and place them in a shallow baking dish and pour the buttermilk over the top. Press the onions down so they're submerged as much as possible and let them soak on the counter for at least an hour. If necessary, stir them around a bit halfway through the soaking process.
  • In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, black pepper and cayenne, and set aside.
  • Pour 1 to 2 quarts canola oil in a pot or Dutch oven. Heat to 375 degrees F, or until a pinch of flour sizzles when sprinkled over the pot.
  • Using tongs, remove a handful of onions from the buttermilk and immediately dunk into the flour mixture. Coat the onions in the flour mixture, and then tap them on the inside of the bowl to shake off the excess.
  • Plunge the onions in the hot oil. With a spoon, fiddle with them a bit just to break them up, and watch them! They'll be ready to remove from the oil in no time flat.
  • When they're golden brown (this should take just a minute or two), remove them from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate.
  • Repeat with the remaining onion slices and serve immediately.
  • Pile these on top of a juicy grilled hamburger - to die for!

Tips:

  • Select the right onions. Choose yellow or white onions, as they have a milder flavor and hold their shape better during frying.
  • Cut the onions evenly. This will ensure that they cook evenly and crispy.
  • Soak the onions in buttermilk or milk. This will help tenderize the onions and make them more flavorful.
  • Use a light coating of flour. Too much flour will make the onion strings greasy and heavy.
  • Preheat the air fryer. This will help the onion strings cook evenly and quickly.
  • Cook the onion strings in batches. This will prevent overcrowding and ensure that they cook evenly.
  • Shake the air fryer basket halfway through cooking. This will help the onion strings cook evenly.
  • Serve the onion strings immediately. They are best when served hot and crispy.

Conclusion:

Air fryer onion strings are a delicious and easy-to-make snack or side dish. They are perfect for parties, potlucks, or a quick and easy meal. With the right tips and techniques, you can make perfect onion strings in your air fryer every time. So next time you're craving a crispy and flavorful snack, give air fryer onion strings a try!
