ALOHA! SWEET & SOUR BURGERS

Aloha! Sweet & Sour Burgers image

My recipe for a great Hawaiian-style sweet-and-sour teriyaki burger, prepared with my Recipe #504527.

Provided by The Spice Guru

Categories     Pineapple

Time 50m

Yield 6 burgers, 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 26

1 lb 75% lean ground beef
12 ounces Spam, grated
6 tablespoons cold water
1/4 cup grated sweet yellow onion
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
fine sea salt
fresh ground white pepper
1/2 cup pineapple juice
3 tablespoons dry sake
3 tablespoons teriyaki sauce
2 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons ketchup
4 teaspoons cornstarch
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon sriracha sauce
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon minced onion flakes
6 slices havarti cheese
6 slices cooked crisp bacon (optional)
6 slices fresh pineapple, cored, trimmed, and sliced 1/2-inch thick
6 slices sweet red onions, sliced 1/4-inch thick
6 leaves fresh green leaf lettuce
1 (4 ounce) can diced green chilies, drained
6 king's original sweet hawaiian rolls
salted butter (lightly spread over bun halves)

Steps:

  • NOTES: IF YOU CANNOT FIND DRY SAKE, SUBSTITUTE IT WITH DRY SHERRY. YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE FRESH GARLIC AND GINGER WITH 1/8 TEASPOON EACH GARLIC POWDER AND GROUND GINGER. FOR A MILDER SAUCE, REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SRIRACHA. DICED ROASTED RED PEPPER MAY BE USED IN PLACE OF DICED ROASTED GREEN CHILES. HAVARTI CHEESE MAY BE REPLACED WITH MONTEREY JACK OR PEPPER JACK CHEESE. USE ONLY KING'S HAWAIIAN BRAND ORIGINAL SWEET HAMBURGER BUNS.
  • PREPARE MEAT: Place 1 lb ground beef into a medium mixing bowl. Grate one loaf of SPAM over the ground beef. Mix 6 tablespoons cold water with 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch then pour over mixture. Grate 1/4 cup sweet onions into bowl. Wearing kitchen gloves, combine the meat mixture, squeezing it through the fingers until well combined.
  • PREPARE PATTIES: Shape meat mixture into 6 equal patties, about 1-inch larger in width than King's Hawaiian Hamburger Buns. Place patties on a platter. Sprinkle each patty on each side with fine sea salt and freshly ground white pepper. Refrigerate patties until ready to grill.
  • PREPARE SAUCE: Whisk all of the sauce ingredients in a small mixing bowl. Transfer sauce mixture into a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly until completely thickened. Reduce heat to lowest setting and cover, stirring occasionally to refresh consistency.
  • PREPARE BUNS: Lightly and evenly butter each separated flat surface of King's Original Hawaiian Sweet Hamburger Buns. Attach buttered cut sides together and return to the original bag until needed, to keep fresh.
  • PREPARE FIXINGS: Cook the bacon if using, until crisp (2 slices per burger). Slice the vegetables and pineapple to specifications. Immerse the onion slices in the sauce. Cover and let heat. Turn once. Remove when onions have softened slightly.
  • PREPARE GRILL: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Arrange patties on one side of the grill. Place pineapple slices on the other side of the grill. Turn each when dark grill-marks appear. Remove patties and pineapple when done to your satisfaction.
  • TOAST BUNS: Place buttered buns sliced-side down on grill, just until medium-toasted.
  • ASSEMBLE BURGERS: Turn the grilled pineapple rings in the heated sauce, until well-coated, then remove. Spoon or brush the prepared sauce evenly across each cut top bun portion. Turn the grilled patties in the sauce pan to coat. Place the cheese slices over patties. Cover saucepan until cheese is melted. Transfer patties onto the bottom bun halves. Stir the drained green chiles well into the sauce mixture. Continue assembling burgers with the bacon (optional), then pineapple, sliced onion, and lettuce. Spoon the sauce over the grilled side of each top bun. Place top buns over each assembled burger.
  • SERVE IMMEDIATELY with Hawaiian potato chips, Maui onion rings or fries, and enjoy!

ALOHA CHICKEN BURGERS

This tasty sandwich is like a luau on a bun!

Provided by Chris McDaniel

Categories     Meat and Poultry Recipes     Chicken     Chicken Breast Recipes

Time 1h20m

Yield 2

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
¼ cup soy sauce
3 slices thick cut bacon
2 large hamburger buns, split
1 tablespoon softened butter
¼ cup teriyaki sauce
2 slices Swiss cheese
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 slices pineapple
2 slices tomato
2 slices of iceberg lettuce

Steps:

  • Place chicken breasts into a plastic zipper bag with soy sauce, seal the bag, and marinate in refrigerator for 30 minutes. While chicken is marinating, place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on a paper towel-lined plate, and set aside. Spread cut sides of hamburger buns with butter.
  • Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat, and lightly oil the grate.
  • Remove the chicken from the soy sauce, and discard the excess soy sauce. Place the chicken breasts onto the preheated grill, and grill until chicken shows good grill marks, is no longer pink inside, and the juices run clear, 4 to 5 minutes per side. When chicken is almost done, brush each piece generously on both sides with teriyaki sauce to finish grilling. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each chicken breast, and cover with a lid to help the cheese melt onto the chicken.
  • While chicken is grilling, spread the buns open on the grill and cook until toasted and showing grill lines, about 2 minutes. Set the buns aside.
  • To assemble, spread the grilled sides of each bun with mayonnaise, and top each bottom bun with a cooked chicken breast, 1 1/2 slices of bacon, a slice of pineapple, a slice from a head of lettuce, a slice of tomato, and the top bun.

ALOHA BURGERS

Thick slices of pineapple, tomato and a spicy Sriracha mayo make this turkey burger anything but boring.

Provided by Angie McGowan

Categories     Entree

Time 40m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 12

1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon Sriracha sauce
1 lb ground turkey
1 teaspoon fresh grated gingerroot
1 clove garlic, grated
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
4 slices fresh pineapple
4 hamburger buns, split
4 lettuce leaves
4 slices tomato
Sliced onion

Steps:

  • Spray gas or charcoal grill rack with cooking spray. Heat grill. Mix sauce ingredients; set aside. In large bowl, mix ground turkey, gingerroot, garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil. Shape mixture into 4 patties.
  • Place patties and pineapple slices on grill over medium heat. Cover grill; cook patties 8 to 10 minutes, turning after 5 minutes, until meat thermometer inserted in center of patties reads 160°F. Cook pineapple slices 8 to 10 minutes or until browned and slightly charred, turning once. Place burgers on bottoms of buns; top with lettuce, grilled pineapple, onion, sauce and tops of buns.

Nutrition Facts : ServingSize 1 Serving

Tips:

  • Use fresh pineapple: Fresh pineapple gives the burgers a sweeter, more vibrant flavor than canned pineapple.
  • Don't overcook the burgers: Overcooked burgers will be dry and tough. Cook them until they are just cooked through, about 4 minutes per side for medium-rare burgers.
  • Toast the buns: Toasted buns add a nice crunch to the burgers and help to hold them together.
  • Use a variety of toppings: The toppings are what really make these burgers special. Try a combination of pineapple, bacon, cheese, lettuce, and tomato.
  • Serve with your favorite sides: These burgers are great with a side of fries, onion rings, or coleslaw.

Conclusion:

Aloha Sweet and Sour Burgers are a delicious and easy-to-make meal that is perfect for a summer cookout or a fun family dinner. The sweet and sour sauce is the perfect complement to the savory burgers, and the pineapple adds a tropical twist. These burgers are sure to be a hit with everyone who tries them!
