Tips:

  • Using a slow cooker is highly recommended for this dish, as it allows the beans and ham hocks to cook low and slow for maximum flavor and tenderness. Remember to sear the ham hocks before adding them to the slow cooker to enhance their flavor.
  • Choose high-quality dried Anasazi beans for the best results. Soaking the beans overnight or for at least 8 hours before cooking is essential to soften them and reduce cooking time. Alternatively, you can use a quick-soak method by bringing the beans to a boil, removing from heat, and letting them sit for an hour before draining and rinsing.
  • Don't overcrowd the slow cooker. If you have a large quantity of beans and ham hocks, consider using two slow cookers or cooking the ingredients in batches.
  • Customize the flavors to your liking by experimenting with different seasonings and vegetables. Feel free to add diced onions, celery, carrots, garlic, or your favorite herbs and spices to the pot.
  • Serve the Anasazi beans with ham hocks over rice, mashed potatoes, or crusty bread. You can also enjoy them as a hearty soup by adding more liquid and vegetables.

Conclusion:

This flavorful and comforting dish of Anasazi beans with ham hocks is a delightful fusion of Native American and Southern cuisines. Using a slow cooker makes the cooking process easy and hands-off, resulting in tender beans and succulent ham hocks infused with rich flavors. Whether you serve it as a main course or a side dish, this dish is sure to satisfy your taste buds and warm your soul.
