ANGEL FOOD SMOOTHIE

I can't remember Smoothie King's recipe exactly. It's been a good 10+ years since I worked there, but here's my rendition. There's no angel food cake in the smoothie. It should probably be renamed Strawberry Banana Smoothie, but that would be boring. Ample ice and a little water is necessary for the proper smoothie consistency. And if your smoothie burps a bubble at the end of the blend, you'll know it's perfect.

Provided by Melissa

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/4 c. water
1 ripe banana
5-6 strawberries, de-stemmed
2 tbsp. nonfat dry milk powder
2 tbsp. turbinado (sugar in the raw)
drop of pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 c. ice

Steps:

  • To your high-powered blender or Vitamix, add in all ingredients in the order listed, beginning with water and ending with ice (water, fruit, powders, ice).
  • Begin blending on low speed for about 30 seconds to bring ice to the bottom of the blender to begin crushing. Slowly turn speed up to high and blend for about a minute or more. You shouldn't be able to hear ice crushing and the smoothie should have a swirl pattern at the top, coming together and dipping in the middle.
  • Turn machine off. Smoothie should burp (or a bubble should pop). Sometimes it takes a stern rock of the blender container for this to happen. If your smoothie to too bubbly, add a bit more ice. If your smoothie is too thick, add a bit more water. Note, consistency will vary a bit based on the size of the fruit and ice cubes as well as the power of the blender.

ANGEL FOOD CAKE I

Homemade angel food cake is worth the work. It is moist, unlike the sweet styrofoam available in the grocery bakery. A tube pan with a removable bottom is highly recommended.

Tips:

  • Use frozen fruit: Frozen fruit is a great way to add nutrients and sweetness to your smoothie without watering it down. Plus, it helps to create a thicker, creamier texture.
  • Add a scoop of protein powder: Protein powder is a great way to boost the protein content of your smoothie and help you feel full and satisfied. Whey protein, pea protein, and hemp protein are all popular options.
  • Use nut butter or avocado for healthy fats: Healthy fats can help you feel full and satisfied, and they can also help your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin A, D, and E. Nut butter and avocado are both great sources of healthy fats.
  • Add greens for a nutritional boost: Greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are packed with nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They can also help to boost the fiber content of your smoothie.
  • Use unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk for a dairy-free option: If you're lactose intolerant or vegan, you can use unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk instead of regular milk. These milks are also lower in calories and saturated fat.
