APFEL KUCHEN (APPLE CAKE)
This is my great grossmutter Weirauch's recipe. She came over to America from Germany as a teenager. It is one of the few "original" recipes I have of hers. The mace gives it a distinctive taste. I hope you enjoy it!

Tips:
- Use the right apples: For a classic Apfelkuchen, use a variety of apples that hold their shape when baked, such as Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Honeycrisp.
- Peel and slice the apples thinly: This will help them to cook evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy.
- Toss the apples in sugar and cinnamon: This will help to sweeten the apples and give them a nice flavor.
- Use a good quality puff pastry: This will help to create a flaky, golden crust.
- Roll out the puff pastry evenly: This will help to ensure that the crust is evenly cooked.
- Bake the Apfelkuchen at a high temperature: This will help to create a crispy crust and prevent the apples from becoming mushy.
- Serve the Apfelkuchen warm or at room temperature: This is when it will be at its best.
