Tips:

  • Use canned baked beans: Canned baked beans are a convenient and time-saving option. Look for low-sodium or no-salt-added varieties to control the sodium content.
  • Add your favorite protein: Ground beef, sausage, or chicken can be added to the casserole for extra protein. Cook the meat beforehand and drain any excess grease.
  • Use fresh apples: Fresh apples add a sweet and tart flavor to the casserole. Peel and dice the apples before adding them to the mixture.
  • Add some crunch: Chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, can add a nice crunchy texture to the casserole. Stir them in just before baking.
  • Make it cheesy: Shredded cheddar cheese or Monterey Jack cheese can be added to the casserole for a cheesy flavor. Sprinkle the cheese on top before baking.
  • Don't overcook the casserole: The casserole is done when the apples are tender and the beans are heated through. Overcooking can make the apples mushy and the beans dry.
